In a groundbreaking development, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has achieved yet another milestone, successfully conducting trials of the Rudram-II, an advanced Air-to-Surface Missile (ASM) with impressive capabilities. Dr Samir V Kamat, Chairman of DRDO, confirmed this remarkable achievement to local media, signaling a significant leap forward in India’s indigenous defence capabilities
The Rudram-II has been designed to be launched from two of India’s most potent fighter aircraft, the Sukhoi-30 and Mirage 2000, marking a strategic enhancement to the firepower of the Indian Air Force (IAF) The missile boasts an impressive operational range of 300 kilometers, allowing it to reach distant targets with unmatched precision and effectiveness.

One of the standout features of the Rudram-II is its versatility, as it comes in two variants, each tailored to address specific operational requirements. The first variant is an anti-radiation missile (ARM) equipped with a PHH-IIR Seeker, designed to neutralize radar installations with utmost accuracy. The second variant serves as a formidable Ground Attack missile with an IIR Seeker, perfectly suited to target airstrips, bunkers, and aircraft hangars, further bolstering the IAF’s ability to dominate the battlefield.
The Rudram-ll’s combat capabilities are further amplified by its warhead capacity, enabling it to carry a 200-kilogram payload. Moreover, its extraordinary speed capabilities, reaching Mach 5.5, ensure swift and decisive action on the battlefield. Crucially, the missile is designed to impact targets at speeds lower than Mach 1 when launched from launch altitudes ranging from 3 to 15 kilometers, ensuring pinpoint precision and minimizing collateral damage.
However DRDO’s ambitious efforts do not stop with the Rudram-II The organization is already hard at work on developing an even more potent weapon system the Rudram-III. This upcoming missile is projected to have a staggering operational range of 550 kilometers, significantly extending India’s strike capabilities. With a larger warhead, the Rudram-III will be capable of performing similar operational roles as its predecessor, further augmenting India’s deterrence posture.
