The Indian Army has decided to buy the new generation Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) under an urgent process. A total of 85 missiles, 48 launchers, and 48 night vision sights will be purchased under this process.
This V-SHORADS system is completely developed by DRDO and has already been successfully trialed. It has modern infrared homing technology, which is capable of destroying helicopters, drones, UAVs and low-flying enemy fighter aircraft.
Why this acquisition is important
With the increasing use of drones and UAVs on the China and Pakistan borders, the army needs a fast-reacting and mobile air defence system. The previous Igla-M system is outdated and had limited functionality. The new V-SHORADS will make the army more powerful and modern.
