India and Singapore have recently strengthened their strategic partnership with Singapore acknowledging India’s interest in joining the Malacca Strait Patrols, a key maritime security initiative involving Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. This request was formally made during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in New Delhi.
India’s interest is backed by its geographical proximity to the Malacca Strait through the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which connect to the Andaman Sea and the Strait.

This patrol aims to enhance maritime security and safeguard one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, which links the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and is vital for global trade and energy supplies, especially for China. India is also in discussions with Malaysia and Indonesia for joint patrolling in the strait alongside Singapore, highlighting its intent to contribute to regional security in this critical maritime corridor.
In addition to maritime cooperation, India and Singapore have elevated their bilateral ties through a newly adopted roadmap under their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which outlines future cooperation in multiple advanced sectors.
The roadmap emphasises expanding cooperation beyond traditional areas, incorporating advanced manufacturing, green shipping, skilling, civil nuclear energy, and urban water management.
The partnership also encompasses cutting-edge fields such as digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI), and space technology. The two countries have signed several memorandums of understanding (MOUs) to foster collaboration in aviation, cleaner shipping, skills development, digital banking, and the space industry.

Notably, they inaugurated Phase Two of the Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal, the largest stand-alone container terminal in India, signifying enhanced port and shipping connectivity.
Both leaders positioned their cooperation as a response to changing global dynamics, focusing on sustainability and technology-driven growth. They underscored the importance of mutual support in semiconductors, sustainability, healthcare, people-to-people exchanges, defence and security cooperation, and the digital economy.
This comprehensive agenda aims to build resilient, long-term economic and strategic ties that address emerging challenges and opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region.
India’s backing by Singapore to join the Malacca Strait Patrol and the broad roadmap for bilateral cooperation reflect deepening ties between the two nations with significant implications for regional security, economic growth, and technological advancement across multiple domains.
