The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) recently accomplished a noteworthy milestone by completing four flight trials of the High-Speed Expendable Aerial Target-ABHYAS with success.

These trials, which took place at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur between January 30 and February 2, 2024, represent a significant development in India’s defence capabilities.

ABHYAS is a state-of-the-art aerial target system that was painstakingly planned and developed by the DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Establishment.

The project demonstrates India’s ability to develop defence technology domestically, which is in line with the country’s strategic goals of technical growth and self-reliance.

A primary feature of these trials is the application of an updated and sturdy configuration with a single booster. This configuration not only increases ABHYAS’s effectiveness and dependability but also demonstrates DRDO’s dedication to innovation and ongoing defence system development.

The air vehicle’s launch system is especially remarkable since it generates initial acceleration using twin underslung boosters. This innovative method ensures peak performance and control of the trajectory in the critical initial phases of flight.

Driven by a small gas turbine, ABHYAS maintains high subsonic speeds throughout the duration of its flight profile, exhibiting exceptional endurance.

Navigation and direction are very important parts of any aerial target system, and ABHYAS does a great job in these areas.

The vehicle is outfitted with an advanced Inertial Navigation System based on Micro-Electromechanical Systems, which ensures accurate navigation capabilities—a crucial component for accomplishing mission goals with utmost precision.

Furthermore, the Flight Control Computer is critical to real-time guidance and control, ensuring optimal performance across a wide range of operational scenarios.

In aerial missions, security and reliability are critical, particularly in low-altitude flights. To alleviate these concerns, ABHYAS incorporates an Indigenous Radio Altimeter, which allows for safe operations at extremely low altitudes.

Furthermore, safe and smooth command and control during the mission is ensured by encrypted Data Link connection between the Target Aircraft and the Ground Control Station.

One noteworthy aspect of ABHYAS is its ability to fly entirely on its own. The vehicle is equipped with sophisticated algorithms and decision-making logic that enable it to function autonomously and reliably carry out predetermined mission profiles.

This autonomous feature increases the adaptability of operations and lessens the mental strain on ground crews, allowing for the effective use of resources while carrying out missions.
